Hi Bruce - Thanks for writing and posting on my tsunami site. It has been a long time since I heard from anyone new that was actually at Khao Lak when the tsunami struck. I would like to get a few more details on what happened for you. Like, did you hear noise or see the tsunami coming and then start riding away as fast as you could go? Were you actually at Mais Quiet Zone 30 seconds before the wave hit land? Or were you a bit south of there? What waterfall did you go to? I know there is one a bit south because that is actually where I was heading that day, except that I noticed a strange white thing (the wave coming in) out in the water and turned down to a beach to investigate. My motorbike was destroyed and I had to run for it on foot.
How many nights had you been at MQZ before the tsunami hit? I had just arrived the night before so did not get much of a chance to meet many of the people there. It was such a cool looking place though that I had changed my plans of staying only 2 nights and instead intended to spend about 5 nights there.
What did you do after the tsunami? Did you spend a night or two at a refugee area or where you able to get to Phuket or somewhere on your own? After that did you continue traveling in Thailand or head back to Australia right away?
