Hi John,
Well, we got back from our 10 day return trip and what an experience!! We traveled from PhiPhi to Ao Nang and Railey Beach and then all up the west coast through Khoa Lak and into Ranong! So much devastation and so much more to do!! We found lots of boats being built, but it was harder to find the people to hook them up with. We ended up connecting with someone who lives in Phuket and was doing a through job "qualifying" fishermen....Placed a number of boats in Ban Nam Khiem and that felt good! This poor village was just flattened and since there were no resorts (just a local fishing village) they didn't seem to be getting as much International Aid. We bought school uniforms and shoes for 42 children in the orphanage or relocation camp from PhiPhi, as well as diapers and milk. So, the need was much more than just boats. We were able to find people who were not fishermen, but lost the tools of their trade (table saw for a woodworker and tools for a motorbike repairman), so my son, Casey, will be going back in June with more money to reach some of these people.
It was hard going to the spot where we experienced the Tsunami, but it was the 100th day -- the day the Buddhist believe is the day of release -- and we saw the EXACT sailboat we had rented anchored in the exact spot where we first saw the wave. And it was the only boat for miles around. That was eerie to say the least! Sometimes we just know we are exactly where we are supposed to be, huh?
Thanks for you email... Hope you are doing well. Julie |
